John Ackroyd 1793 - 1849

John Ackroyd was born in Edlington, Doncaster, Yorkshire, England in 1793, the son of Joseph and Ann (Grayson) Ackroyd. He married Sarah Colley, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Bolton) Colley. Joseph Colley was a land and property owner in Conisbrough, Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, he was also a farmer.

There is a monumental Inscription for Joseph Colley in the Doncaster Family History Society booklet for the MI's for Conisbrough. The stone is still standing but the inscription is hardly visible today. The recording of these Monumental Inscriptions, done in 1982 has proved to be a valuable asset for us and other researchers.

On the death of Joseph Colley in 1833 the land and property came to his two daughter's, Sarah and Elizabeth. Joseph did not leave a will. In time it came to John Ackroyd.

In the Conisbrough Court Rolls between the years of 1835 and 1840 there is mention of the rentals, etc. of the lands and property of John Ackroyd. After 1840 there is no mention of this in the Court Roll Books.

John Ackroyd moved to Conisbrough after his marriage to Sarah Colley and raised all his children there. He died in 1849 and is buried in the churchyard of St Peter's Church.
